No rush, just looking

Anna in the backroom

Anna in the backroom

I am fascinated by the common scene of young women meticulously grooming themselves in the mirrors of low-end venues—places like third-rate bathrooms that contrast with their polished appearance. This work is inspired by the bittersweet, static moments of Saturday nights in contemporary Barcelona, where beauty meets a gritty, everyday reality.

I hope the viewer captures that sense of a ‘frozen moment’ in time. Rather than focusing on technical perfection, I want to evoke the feeling of a night out: the mixture of vanity, expectation, and the slight melancholy that lingers in the air of an urban restroom.

I chose a pop-art influenced style because it allows me to use bold colors and sharp outlines to highlight the character, moving away from realism to focus on the mood. Acrylics provided the necessary vibrance to contrast the subject’s youth with the cold, tiled geometry of the setting, emphasizing the ‘backroom’ atmosphere.
